The Osteoporosis Care Gap:
Tens of thousands of Canadians suffer preventable fractures every year because their osteoporosis was undiagnosed and untreated. These broken bones come at great cost to the healthcare system.
Yearly, approximately 200,000 Canadians will break a bone; 30,000 will break a hip.
More than 80% of these fractures are due to osteoporosis.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer from an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime.
50% of hip fracture patients have had a prior fragility fracture.
Effective osteoporosis medications reduce the risk of repeat fractures
by 50% and are available through the various provincial/territorial
public drug plans, many for under $400 a year.
Yet only ~20% of the patients treated for fracture in Canada
ever receive the osteoporosis care they need to prevent their next fracture.
We are missing a significant opportunity to greatly reduce future fracture costs.
